Atlanta—the largest city in Georgia, as well as the state’s capital—has always been home to some of the most splendid holiday celebrations in the country. Festivities are especially plentiful during the Christmas season, when the city holds some of its most iconic celebrations. To get the best of such occasions, it is advisable to make hotel reservations to stay in downtown Atlanta, where you can absorb most of the fun and relax before and after the festivities. Here are some of the wintertime events and festivals worth checking out on your stay in Atlanta!
The Children’s Christmas Parade
If you happen to be in town on the morning of December 6, make sure you watch as Peachtree St. is transformed into Santa Claus Lane. Filled with floats, marching bands and more, The Children’s Christmas Parade is one of the largest holiday parades in the South. Plan your Atlanta accommodations today to make sure you are one of the over 300,000 spectators that are invoked with holiday cheer year after year. Downtown Atlanta accommodations at the Ellis Hotel place right on Peachtree St., just a short walk to the parade route.
A Christmas Carol
Now, what would a Christmas season be without A Christmas Carol? This upcoming stage rendition of one of Charles Dickens’ most beloved works marks the 25th anniversary of the Alliance Theatre’s tribute to the legendary English author. Based on a novella published almost two centuries ago, the story—about a miser who learns a lesson or two about the virtue of giving—never gets old. The staging runs from November 21 to Christmas Eve.
Garden Lights at the Atlanta Botanical Garden
Covering an area of 30 acres that is adjacent to Piedmont Park, the Atlanta Botanical Garden was incorporated in 1976 for displaying, conserving and drawing people to the diversity of plant collections. Most recently, the non-profit organization kicked off an annual electrical extravaganza named Garden Lights, which runs from November 15 until January 3. Currently in its fourth year, Garden Lights include fan favorites such as Orchestral Orbs, Radiant Rainforest, and Glittering Galaxy. This year’s installment promises to feature a brand new color scheme, so make sure you check it out during your holiday stay in Atlanta.
Ice Skating in Atlanta
No holiday season is truly complete without a go around or two on one of Atlanta’s numerous ice skating rinks. Luckily for travelers looking to get their skating fix, there are several rinks located throughout the city. Whether you prefer the outdoor surroundings and rink-side festivities at the Centennial Olympic Park Ice Rink (just two blocks from the Ellis Hotel) or warm comfort and festive atmosphere of the Southwest Rink at Park Tavern, you are guaranteed the opportunity to skate until your heart’s end with a visit to downtown Atlanta.
Macy’s Pink Pig
In the 1950s, a holiday ride designed as a giant pink pig made its debut at the Rich’s downtown store. Officially known as Priscilla the Pink Pig, this ride has become the centerpiece of a parade that takes place at the Macy’s store located at Lenox Square annually. Visitors are treated to an enchanting ride on train tracks that run through a life-sized storybook inside a giant tent, and they receive an “I Rode the Pink Pig” sticker as proof of participation. Macy’s Pink Pig runs from November 1 to January 4, and is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Showing at the Mainstage Theater of the Center for Puppetry Arts is a puppet show based on Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the 1964 stop-motion animated TV special that has perennially been a Christmas favorite. Fun for kids of all ages, the show will be running from November 13 to December 28; there will be no shows on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
